There are so many diseases that deserve to have a lot attention and resources allocated to it’s maintenance/cure. With the limited resources that we have, there are certain diseases that get more attention. One of these diseases that does receive a lot of attention is heart disease. Heart disease is the number one cause of death in the United States. According to the CDC, 1 in 4 deaths are related to heart disease. Heart disease can be caused by various things. this includes hypertension, history of smoking, genetic predisposition, and various other things. One of the reasons that I am curious to learn more about heart disease is because my grandmother passed away from a heart attack a long time ago. She had heart disease. Heart disease is common and understanding it will help us understand what we can do to prevent it from happening to more people.

Another disease that is interesting to me is thyroid disease. The butterfly shaped gland in the neck is important in regulating multiple metabolic processes throughout the body. Most famously, it is known to regulate the thyroid hormone production once signaled by the brain. I am also interested in this because my mom has hypothyroidism. This is when the thyroid gland under produces the thyroid hormone T4. There are drugs taken to regulate these hormone levels to normal. It is a disease that a lot of people have and although it is not dangerous, it can be if not treated correctly.

The last disease is interesting to learn about is diabetes. Particularly type 1 diabetes where the pancreas produces little or no insulin. Insulin is the hormone needed to allow glucose to enter the cells. There are many drugs that are used to treat diabetes and learning about the mechanisms of diabetic patients and drugs used to maintain homeostasis
